EPISODE 5 – LOGOS AND COSMOS

“Is that the place, Sir?”

“Yes. Our orders are to find out whatever we can regarding the lost pokemon Kamiteng.”

“Kamiteng!?”

“Keep it down grunt. Yes, Kamiteng. And before you ask, yes, the Commander is certain the legends are true.”

There was a new moon in the sky and barely any light came down to earth. It was too dark to notice the bright pink of the trees that grow only there in Everbloom Forest. Somewhere in it Gavin and Mike were sleeping in their camp after a long day of walking, probably dreaming about all the adventures their journey had in stock. Zorua, as always, was awake and looked to the place where the moon was supposed to be, but nobody could see. Without knowing why Zorua felt there was something disturbing about that moonless night. It was too dark for anyone to notice these strange people in blue uniforms watching this temple outside of Newborn City, where anyone would have said time had stood still for ages.

“All clear Sir. Nobody in the surroundings, neither people nor pokemon.”

“Perfect. Set up a perimeter. You three are coming with me.”

It could be seen that the grunts were a little scared. The name of Kamiteng made them really nervous, especially after hearing that their Commander thought the legends were real. They had no reason to disbelief the word of their Leader. The man in charge and the three grunts approached to building hidden by the night and backed by the rest of their men, who were hiding in the trees all around them.

“What are you waiting for? Open the door before I lose my patience.”

One of the grunts took a crowbar and took a step forward.

“What are you doing? Are you out of your mind? We don’t know what might be on the other side. We have to be smoother than that.”

“Sorry Joachim….I mean Sir.”

“Just Sir for you Grunt.” Said the man in charge, as he took a pokeball out. “Banette, check the other side and if safe open the door with psychic.”

The marionette pkmn disappeared through the temple’s wooden door and a minute later the door was open.

“Well done Banette. You grunt could learn a thing or two. Now search the place, and do it fast.”

“What are we looking for again, Sir?”

“Anything related to Kamiteng.”

That name made chills run down the grunt’s spine. But an order was an order, and who was he to question the Commander? In front of the door was a big hall with statues of three pokemon. There were corridors that connected that hall with several smaller rooms, which the grunts searched methodically and fast. They didn’t want to upset the man by the name of Joachim any further. In the center hall there were three shrines with small statues made of different gemstones.

“See those statues grunts? Those are the Powers of the South. Horeis, Soleo and Azteotl.”

“But Sir, what do they have to do with Kamiteng?”

“That is for the Commander to know and for you not to inquire. We have all sworn to give our lives for the Commander and the glory of Team Logos. Now it’s time to prove our worth. So get to work.”

“Yes Sir!” the grunts all answered in unison.

Those words had motivated the grunts, who swiftly searched the entire place minutely, but were unable to find anything. There were no papers, no books, and no ancient manuscripts. Nothing even remotely related to Kamiteng.

“Nothing, Sir. We’ve looked everywhere and there are no references to Kamiteng’s legend.”

“I’ll assume you didn’t find any artifacts, such as masks for example.”

“Negative, Sir.”

Suddenly a lot of loud noises came from outside.

“What is that?” Joachim said.

A grunt came running through the door, agitated.

“Sir, we are under attack.”

“It’s them isn’t it?” Joachim asked in a surprisingly calmed manner.

“Yes Sir, it’s Team Cosmos.” The grunt replied before passing out on the floor.

They all went outside, leaving their passed out comrade lying on the temple’s cold floor. There were battles going on all over the place. A Luxio used spark illuminating a big area in one place, in another place a Politoed used hydro pump on a Swellow that dodged it and counter attacked with aerial ace, and a Seviper was having a really intense battle with a Zangoose. The Team Logos’ people were dressed in red. A young lady and some Team Logos grunts cut the way of Joachim and his men.

“So we finally meet.” The lady said. “You must be one of Team Logos Guards. Which are you?”

“I’m Joachim and I suggest you surrender your men now before it is too late, and I’m afraid I haven’t heard your name yet.”

“My name is not important, but I would watch your tone if I were you Guard Joachim, you don’t want to upset me.”

Both spoke very arrogantly and seemed very calm, as if they were untouchable, despite the fact of all the fierce battles that were going on around them.

Back in Gavin and Mike’s camp, in Everbloom Forest, Zorua had heard the battles in the distance and was trying to wake up both trainers; Needless to say it was not an easy task.

“What’s wrong Zorua?” said Gavin in the sleepiest voice you could ever listen to.

“Yeah it better be good Zorua, I was dreaming that I was beating Noah in battle.”

Zorua transformed into a big arrow sign, pointing to the directions the sounds were coming from.

“What’s there Zorua?” said Gavin before realizing the noises “Wait a second…that sounds like pokemon battling.”

“It sure sounds like a big battle.”

At that very moment a Houndoom used flamethrower on a Venomoth, who managed to evade its foe’s move. Gavin and Mike could see the light of the flame over the tree tops.

“We have to go there man. Something is very wrong.” Gavin said firmly as he got out of his sleeping bag and up on his feet. “If there are any pokemon hurt we have to help them.”

“Ok…” Mike didn’t sound so convinced, he hated when his sleep was interrupted. “But we have to be careful, we don’t know what could be there…also…after that we are going back to sleep…right?”

Zorua led the group towards the direction of the noises, which got louder as they advanced through the forest. When they were close enough they started to hear the voices of the grunts, ordering their pokemon moves. When they were really close they could see all the people and pokemon battling. They saw the ones in blue fighting against the others in red, and that they weren’t battling for sport.

“This looks like a real battlefield.” Gavin whispered.

“What could they possibly want? Why are they battling? And why right here in the middle of Everbloom Forest?”

“Look Mike, that temple. There are some people standing over there, they seem to be in charge. We have to do something. Whatever they are planning can’t be good. Are you with me Zorua?” Zorua nodded.

“Colorbri and I have your back as well Gavin.”

Neither Joachim, nor the lady or any of the grunts noticed the two young trainers, they were too busy.

“We need a way in. Zorua, do you think you can make us look like grunts?”

Zorua nodded and made an illusion. To everyone else Gavin and Mike now looked like grunts of both factions. They both made it as if they were battling with Colorbri and Cielver, so that Zorua could focus on the illusion. Some grunts noticed the young boys, but since they were having battles of their own they didn’t pay them much attention.

“Do you really expect me to surrender my people? I don’t think Team Logos’ men are doing well enough for you to be making demands, Guard Joachim. You make a bold move by coming to South Platinia.”

“Hey you!” Gavin shouted.

With the help of Zorua’s illusions Gavin and Mike had made it to where Joachim and the lady were.

“Who the hell are you boy? Get lost before you get hurt, unless you want to, in which case I will show you some of my power.” Joachim said.

“I’m Gavin, Gavin Roderick. And you will need much more than threats to make me leave. Whatever it is you are doing you are clearly up to no good or otherwise you wouldn’t be here in the middle of the night battling like you are for whatever reason.”

“You shouldn’t get in the way of Team Logos boy.”

“Wait…what was your name again?” asked the lady.

“Gavin Roderick and you will also stop all this.”

“Mmm” the lady made a gesture of resignation “This operation has been compromised. Team Cosmos, retreat!”

Right after the lady said that Joachim realized what was going on. He hated it, but he had no choice.

“Dammit! It isn’t over till its over. We’ll meet again Team Cosmos, and Team Logos will prevail. Team Logos, retreat!”

“Neither of you are going anywhere!” yelled Gavin.

But before Gavin could do anything one of Team Cosmos grunts sent out a Magmar, and covered everything with a thick smokescreen.

“Cielver, go! Use gust!”

When Cielver dissipated the smoke all of Team Logos and Cosmos’ men were gone.

“Damn. They got away. I tell you, they were up to no good.”

“You did good Gavin” said suddenly an unknown voice.

A man jumped from a tree nearby just in front of Gavin and Mike. He was wearing black and white robes and his face was covered. His eyes could barely be seen under his hood. He seemed young, but not too much. By his side was a pokemon.

“I’ve heard that voice before.” Gavin said. “It can’t be. Is it you…? ...Toshi?”

“It has been a long time young man” said Toshi as he revealed his face.

“Hello Toshi!” Gavin said with a big smile. “Who’s that pokemon you have there?”

“It’s my companion, Ceredge.”

               Gavin pointed his dex.

Ceredge, the farmer pkmn. This pkmn uses its pincers to dig furrows where they plant all sorts of crops. It diligently cares for them until they are ready for harvest. Its pincers are also very sharp and can cut anything from hard wood to very resistant metal..”

“What?! You are Toshi?! The Newborn City Gym Leader?! You know Gavin?!” Mike was astonished.

“Ha ha. Yes Mike. Toshi is a friend of my father. I met him back in Trinitipolis City, before I went to PMTA, when I was little. Toshi, this is Mike. He’s a friend of mine from Cristalbay City. Ah, and he’s also Prof. Cedar’s nephew.”

“Hello Toshi, this is my friend Colorbri.” Mike said with a smile.

“Hello Mike, nice to meet you. Nice to meet you too Colorbri.” Replied Toshi with a smile.

“Toshi, who were those people?” Gavin asked, again with a serious face.

“I’d be more comfortable talking about all this inside my Gym. They seem to be gone for now, but if there’s something I know is that the forest have ears.”

“Sure, but we have to get our staff from our camp first.”

After returning to their camp, Gavin and Mike followed Toshi some kilometers to Newborn City. The sun had come out as when they were still on the road, so they could see the city in all its glory. Most houses were made of wood, with dark ceiling tiles and very beautiful architecture. As you already know Newborn City is in the middle of Everbloom Forest, a place where trees have beautiful pink blossoms all year round, even in winter. It is said that it’s its peacefulness that makes them bloom in all four seasons. They passed by a square with a big pink tree. There was a sign under it that said: “Newborn City: A city where the past and the future live together as one.” Not long after they arrived at the Newborn City Gym. It was a big estate all made of wood with very beautiful ornaments and colorful details in the form of various pokemon, many of which neither Gavin nor Mike had ever seen in their entire lives. Its style was similar to the temple where they had been earlier. Despite the fact that it was very early in the morning there were many pupils training with their pkmn in the various yards and gardens that were inside the Gym. They followed Toshi to his office.

“Here we can talk.” Toshi said “I’ve heard about those men before. They are Team Logos and Team Cosmos. Two groups that have been operating throughout Platinia for a while. They have been involved in some criminal activities all over the Region. They seem to have some interest in places related to the mythology of Platinia, but from what I’ve heard, nobody truly knows what they actually want. One thing is certain, by the way they fight each other, it can’t be anything good.”

“What was that temple Toshi?” asked Mike.

“That was a temple people built in ancient times in honor of the Powers of the South.”

“I’ve heard about them before. I think my father told me something about it when I was little. Something about the great Powers of the South.” Gavin said.

“The Powers of the South?” asked Mike cluelessly.

“The Powers of the South is a group of three legendary pokemon. Their legends say they can only live in South Platinia and never travel to the North. They are said to protect the South and help keep the balance alongside their counterparts, the Powers of the North.”

“So how many are there then?” Mike asked further.

“Six in total Mike. Three powers of the South and three of the North. The Legends say that they exist in three pairs, so that for each pair one is a Power of the South and the other of the North. The key to all balance in the Platinia Region rests in that balance between their powers. According to the ancients these powers keeps Platinia alive and together. If that balance was broken nature in Platinia would be disturbed, the pkmn would abandon the land and the seas and the entire region would be nothing but a deserted piece of what we call the world.”

“What do you think Team Logos and Team Cosmos want with them?”

“I don’t know. But by the looks of it, nothing good. I was watching everything from the shadows. I was in the forest to train in the dark when I heard noises. I hid with Ceredge from the grunts. I saw the man in charge head inside the temple, after that the others, Team Cosmos, arrived and the big battle began. And then you came along. I still don’t understand why they left the place with such a hurry.”

“They left after I introduced myself.”

“Mmm, did you tell them your full name Gavin?”

“Yes.”

“Mmm maybe they recognized you as your father’s son. Mmm”

“Wait. What? What do you mean Toshi? Gavin, who’s your dad?” Mike didn’t understand.

“Gavin’s father is Jakob Roderick, the Trinitipolis Gym Leader.” answered Toshi.

“What? No way! Why didn’t you tell me Gavin? Why? Tell me, why?”

“I just didn’t think it was that much of an issue really. It’s not that I was hiding it from you… I mean, you were going to find out anyway I guess.”

“You should have told me anyway! That’s so cool! Does that mean that you know all the Gym Leaders in Platinia Gavin? Do you know them? Do you Gavin?”

“Ha ha. No. I only know Toshi, because he took my father’s class about Platinia’s mythology when I was little.”

“That’s right. Jakob is not only a great Gym Leader; he is also one of the top experts on Platinia’s mythology in the world. He is a teacher in Platinia’s Pokemon University.”

“So you think when I told them who I was they didn’t attack because of my father? That doesn’t make much sense in my opinion. As strong as my father is in battle I don’t think that would stop those kind people.”

“Mmm I’m at a loss... Anyway. What brings you to Newborn City Gavin? I heard classes were over in PMTA and since Jakob told me you were studying there I wondered what pokemon ended up being your starter. I bet it’s this Zorua. I saw its illusion back at the temple. Very impressive indeed. I had never heard of a Zorua capable of doing such things, they are usually able only to change forms.”

“Yeah, Zorua was my starter. It’s my best friend and its abilities are awesome.” Gavin said with a big smile on his face. “We try to practice new illusions as much as we can. And the reason why I’m here is because I want to challenge you in a Gym battle.”

“Great” said Toshi with a smile “But I’m afraid it won’t happen today. I have something to do that requires my complete attention.”

“Damn, I really wanted to battle today.”

Gavin was rather disappointed, but he figured it had something to do with what had happened earlier with Team Logos and Team Cosmos.

“Mmm…Gavin.” Mike interrupted.

“Huh?”

“For starters, you haven’t even registered yourself in Platinia’s Pokemon League, and in case you haven’t noticed we haven’t had any sort of breakfast and it’s almost lunch time.” Mike yawned “And there’s also the fact that you woke me up and I still need some sleep”

“Mmm… I guess I got a little bit carried away by the moment, He he”

“Then I’ll see you both tomorrow for the battle. You can get registered in the pokecenter that is just down the road, to the right. Nurse Joy will assist you. And get ready Gavin, because I’m not going to let you get an easy win.”

“I would be disappointed if you did.” Gavin replied.

Gavin and Mike had lunch at the pokecenter, while they let Zorua, Cielver, Pooble, Colorbri and Mogarin eat as well and play after lunch. Nurse Joy helped Gavin get registered in Platinia’s Pokemon League. All he had to do was handle his dex and Joy used the registration machine to check Gavin’s data.

“Congratulations Gavin, you are now officially registered in Platinia’s League. I wish you good luck in your journey. Platinia’s Gyms are said to be particularly hard, for being not type based.” said Nurse Joy smiling.

Gavin knew that Toshi’s Gym’s specialty was pokemon with scythes and sharp edges, and that he gave the Sharp Badge to those that were able to defeat him in a 3 vs. 3 Gym battle. He also was certain that Ceredge was going to take part on that battle, but he had absolutely no idea about what other pokemon Toshi had. He didn’t really have any options. He had to use all his pokemon in the battle, so he knew the battle tactics and his creativity were going to be the difference. He had a chance to battle with Zorua and Cielver, but he had only seen Pooble battle under Doctor Weatherly’s command so he knew he had to practice that afternoon, if he wanted to improve his chances. He was sitting on his bed on their room in the pokecenter, thinking about his years in PMTA. It was time to prove it hadn’t been all in vain. He was determined to battle with his full potential, not only for him, but for his pokemon and his father, who had taken the trouble to send him to the best trainer school in Platinia. He understood it wasn’t just about a badge and victory. He wanted to show Toshi that he was one with his pokemon, that he was no longer a kid.

“Zorua, Cielver and Pooble, it’s time to train.” Gavin said as he stood up from his bed.

Gavin told Mike he’d be back for dinner and then went to the training ground that was behind the pokecenter’s main building, to get ready for whatever adventures were ahead of them.
